So here’s the skinny: I attempted a twitter hashtag meetup thing for the past month and a half. We called it #BoardGameVS, it happened every Thursday at 3pm EST, and the goal was to debate board game related topics. I discuss more details in this post.
Overall, it was a good experience. I was able to gain interesting feedback from potential future customers, I had an excuse to hang out online with Nate from the Ministry of Games, and it created another opportunity for the community to talk about board games.
Things I would do differently
I was too mild in my startup approach. I left the topics more broad in the beginning to encourage participation.
I feared that being too niche would have limited people from joining the conversation. In result, it felt too similar to #boardgamehour.
I ran it from the @HappyMitten Twitter handle. I did that because we already have a decent audience to tap into. I control @boardgamevs but with 0 followers, I didn’t think it’d have as much of a pull.
The problem with that and another reason why a shyed away from controversial topics was it may poorly reflect on the Happy Mitten brand. If I were to continue, I’d let it be its own entity.
While I have roughly 1 million ways I’d love to fix, tweak, expand, and nurture the idea, I don’t have the time. Our schedules are hard enough to keep up as it is and with a Kickstarter around the corner, it wouldn’t be prudent to continue.
That leaves #BoardGameVS with 2 options:
1. The idea is tabled until we have the time for it or
2. A faithful member of the community steps up and takes it over. I will gladly pass off the @boardgamevs and #BoardGameVS event to a person who can give it the time it deserves.
A huge thanks goes out to all the people who participated in #BoardGameVS’ short life. Now it’s up to you!
