After sharing with many of my friends that we’ve started a board game publishing company, I’m usually met by excitement, then confusion. The whole idea behind publishing board games isn’t complicated, it’s just not something many people are familiar with. To help dispel any confusion, the following is a simplified version of what being a game publisher actually means.
Q- What is your game?
A- First of all, we aren’t producing just one game. The point of being a publisher is that eventually we will be producing multiple games. Also, the games we will be producing are not random things we thought up. While we have many ideas, we decided that it is best to work with people who create games. For example, Random House Publishing does not write their own books. Instead, they find excellent authors, work with them to craft their stories, and eventually publish a best-selling book. In the same way, we will find designers, work with them to develop their game to its best potential and take it to market.
Q- Are you making games yourself?
A- No, we are not going to run a factory out of our basement! Once we have a complete, tested, and proven game, we will be working with a manufacturer to produce the board, cards, box, components and whatever else we might need. The manufacturers that we will work with specialize in making board games. These types of manufacturers exist both in the states and abroad in places like China.
Q- Are you shipping the games?
A- Again, that’s a negative. While personally shipping games may work for some people, we would like our garage to be a place for our cars, not a warehouse for our games. Instead we are considering different distributors to do our fulfillment. A distributor helps manage and deliver purchases through the website and also aids in getting products into your friendly local game store.
Q- Are you trying to be the next Hasbro?
A- No. Although we have a clear business plan in place and intend on doing great things with Happy Mitten, our plans are more realistic. Tabletop games are growing in popularity but it’s still a niche market. In addition, excellent games are being released all the time from companies big and small. We know carving out our space in the industry will be challenging but we are skilled, motivated, and determined. The plan is to become a reputable and sustainable company while having fun in the process.
Hopefully that clarifies what we are doing. There is a lot more behind the scenes work that goes into everything but that is a decent snapshot for a little more insight. Click here to read about why we started the company, feel free to leave comments/ questions below.
